Less is more

chocolate-567234_1280A little of what you fancy does you good – as my grandmother used to say.

And that’s exactly it.  A little.  And enjoy it.  Really take the time to enjoy it.

The harm comes from guilt.  If you are thinking “Oh, I shouldn’t be doing this” as you eat your favourite dessert, then those negative thoughts cause your body to be flooded with negative emotions, whereas if you are enjoying every single spoonful and savouring every mouthful, the body’s response is very different.

Deprivation doesn’t work – have a little and enjoy it.  Indulge once in a while.  Don’t take it as an excuse to go overboard.

Enjoy the glass of good wine rather than the whole bottle of cheap plonk.

If you feel you want more, look at why you want it.  Are you upset or feeling out of control? Is it an emotional need you are addressing with food?

Recently I saw a wonderful quote along the lines of discipline being a case of choosing what you want in the future over what you want now.

So when you are considering not going to exercise class or stuffing that piece of chocolate cake remember your long term goals.

No-one is perfect, if you overindulge, miss your class, forgive yourself and get right back on track.

And if you really have to indulge, remember, a little of what you fancy does you good.  Less is more.
