I saw something today I haven’t seen in a while
I saw something today I haven’t seen in a while. Years, in fact. I was quite thrilled and I have to say I felt quite smug about it.
What was it I saw?
Why did I feel smug? Because I knew that it was by committing to a consistent, focused exercise routine and sticking to it that I am getting results.
Now, there are several words in that sentence that are somewhat alien to my nature: committing; consistent; focused; exercise; routine; sticking to it.
Let’s examine them.
Committing: My usual thought process goes along the lines of “Well, what if I commit to this, then something else comes along that’s better, I won’t be able to do it because I’m committed to this already…..”
Not true. Making a commitment actually works the other way round and opportunities come up that support and expand the original commitment. Amazing and true.
Consistent and Routine: My inner rebel comes alive at those words. What? Do the same thing every day at the same time? That’s so predictable. Where’s the fun in that?
Structure gives freedom. Do what you have to do. Making it routine means it gets done on autopilot and leaves time and energy free for other things.
Exercise: If it’s fun, I’ll do it.
Exercise is the feel-good factor! Endorphins are released by the pituitary gland. Hence the expression “Runner’s high”. Your body is designed to move and loves to move. Find the movement that suits you best.
Focused and Sticking to it: What was I doing………….? Oooh, look! Nice new shiny object……
Finish one thing before you start the next. Remember what the original objective was. Don’t get distracted from your goal. Sometimes it takes a while to see results.
Those days you feel discouraged and can’t be bothered, take a little time to remember your goal, look at where you were when you started and how far you’ve come. Congratulate yourself and carry on. Get the results you want. Check out this photo by Laura Sykora ( www.twofitmoms.com). Be inspired.
